Call for Entries + Exciting Juror Announcement



We are pleased to announce a call for entries for our upcoming juried exhibition, Manipulated.  

Manipulated is an open call for entries of photo-based works which have been altered by the artist’s physical hand at any point in the process of its creation. All content and photographic media is acceptable — alternative processes, traditional black and white, and/or digital methods, as long as the actual hand of the artist has been employed to manipulate either the negative, the print, or both. Images which have been altered using digital methods are welcome, but only when utilized in addition to physical hand manipulation.

We are thrilled and honored to bring on Ariel Shanberg as our juror for Manipulated. Shanberg is the executive director for The Center for Photography at Woodstock. Shanberg was appointed executive director of The Center for Photography at Woodstock in the fall of 2003. As the fourth executive director in the organization’s history, Shanberg sets and oversees the CPW’s artistic mission and creative offerings, working with the staff and Board to ensure its historic & continued excellence.

Shanberg serves as editor of CPW’s PQ and has curated many exhibitions at CPW, most recently A River Runs Through Me. as well as at other venues including Light Factory, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, the Islip Art Museum, the Dorsky Museum, and an upcoming exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography in July 2011. He has served as a panelist for the the 2011 New York Photo Festival Awards, the National Endowment for the Arts, Media Alliance’s Media Action Grant, Light Works’ Regional Photographers’ Grant, and a reviewer at both regional & national SPE conferences, FotoFest, and Rhubarb Rhubarb as well as an invited speaker at Bucknell, Syracuse, and Rutgers Universities.

He has contributed essays on the works of various photographers for monographs and such publications as Contact Sheet, European Photography, and Nueva Luz. Additionally he sits on the Advisory Board of En Foco and was the 2007 Conference Chair for SPE’s joint regional Mid-Atlantic & Northeast conference held in November 2007 at Woodstock. In 1997 he received his  BFA cum laude in painting from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

All entries will be submitted to manipulated@castellphotography.com, and the deadline to submit is Sunday, September 4th.
