Join us this evening for an opening reception featuring still life platinum works from Gary Geboy! The artist will be in attendance, and beer and wine will be provided — we hope to see you this evening! These works are simply exquisite, and are created using rare japanese papers and in many of the prints the artist has applied gold leaf which creates a truly gorgeous affect. These works must be seen close up! If you can’t make it out, the work will remain on exhibit through mid-October.
From the Press Release:
Curiosities will feature work from two similar series of work from Beaufort, North Carolina based photographer Gary Geboy. Both series depict everyday objects, plants, and artifacts that the artist has collected or found. As a native of the south and lifelong collector of objects, Geboy values these items as sort of southern artifacts, and his work captures them in a manner that likens them to a treasure or a prize as opposed to a simple everyday object. The artist states: “I’ve always collected curiosities, things I didn’t need but intuitively treasured as a child…I remember the fascination of specimens that naturalists brought home from far away. Travel was out of most people’s reach, so even common things found overseas became wonders in a glass cabinet, or illustrated on a parchment page. I wanted to elevate the overlooked details of the Southern landscape to that same sense of marvel. To me, they are treasures, so I add gold leaf to a platinum/palladium print and allow its luminance to work a kind of magic. The back of a magnolia leaf becomes a map; a robin’s egg a jewel.” Geboy has been working in photography and cinematography for 30 years, and his interests have taken him around the world from Peace Corps documentaries in Kyrgyzstan to a National Gallery of Art exhibit on ancient Mexico. His fine art photography has been exhibited at the Charleston’s City Gallery at Waterfront Park, the Charleston Center for Photography, the McLean Center for the Arts in McLean, Virginia, as well solo exhibitions throughout the nation. “There’s something innately similar between the tradition of the south and the tradition of the still life, and that’s part of what makes these images work so beautifully. They are delicate, the are simple, they are exquisite.” says gallery director Heidi Gruner. The opening reception for Curiosities will be held on Friday, September 2nd from 6p.m. to 8p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres, wine, and beer will be served. The artist will be in attendance to meet guests, answer questions, and enjoy the event.
